20/20 Alien Autopsy

April 4, 1997
ABC's 20/20 featured CSICOP in its story on the Roswell "alien autopsy" film. As Barbara Walters remarked, "it claims to be a creature from another world... but this alien is probably from the world of make believe." From the start, this report was highly skeptical.

Philip Klass, CSICOP fellow and publisher of the Skeptic's UFO Newsletter, spoke about the Roswell incident.

Joe Nickell, CSICOP Senior Research Fellow, spoke about the history of alien images.

Finally, 20/20 interviewed special effects experts Steve Johnson and Trey Stokes (see the January 1996 Skeptical Inquirer for Trey's excellent debunking of the "alien autopsy" film). Not satisfied to merely talk about the film, Steve Johnson created his own staged alien autopsy.

Alien Autopsy
The new alien autopsy was far more sophisticated than the original. We were treated to high-quality color shots, in which the alien's internal organs did not appear completely realistic, but I imagine that a grainy black and white film of the event would be hard to distinguish from actual innards. In any case, the new alien autopsy excelled over the original in all areas.
