Friday, March 14, "Unsolved Mysteries" will feature a segment on spontaneous
human combustion -- the superstition that the human body can burst into flame
and be consumed without an external source of ignition. For a skeptical,
scientific view, the popular television program turned once again to CSICOP
and the Skeptical Inquirer magazine. CSICOP's Senior research Fellow, Joe
Nickell, has made an extensive study of the alleged phenomenon together with
a colleague, John F. Fischer, a forensic analyst and Scientific Consultant to
CSICOP (see Skeptical Inquirer, Summer 1987). Their research has been
published widely and has appeared in forensic journals and textbooks.
Nickell, who appears frequently on radio and television programs, was
interviewed for the segment. "Unsolved Mysteries" airs on NBC. Check your
