"Miracle Photo"
at Medjugorje

Did God send a shaft of light through the heart of a Medjugorje visionary?

Patrick Fitzgerald
July 1, 1996

It was 1989 when my gradmother travelled to Medjugorje in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Though she was fighting cancer (actually, because she was fighting cancer), she was determined to visit this village where visionaries reportedly receive messages from the Virgin Mary.

Soon after she returned, she received a photograph in the mail, sent from a fellow traveller to Medjugorje. The photo showed one of the visionaires (Vicka) speaking to a crowd beneath some trees. The sun brightly shines in the upper-right corner of the photograph, and a shaft of light appears to pierce the visionary. It enters through her back, apparently passing through her heart, and it emerges from a prayer book she is holding. The end of the shaft resembles the point of a spear.

Taped to the back of the blown-up photograph was the following:

To my untrained eye, the photograph appears undoctored, and the flashes of light can probably be attributed to a lens flare due to a backlit picture (the picture on this page is heavily retouched, click it to see a larger, unretouched picture). I tried to locate a Theresa M. F. Marten in Los Gatos, but was unsuccessful.

Followup

June 28, 1998

The Medjugorje photograph might cause alarm to film buffs. In the 1976 film The Omen, starring Gregory Peck, a similar photograph is uncovered.

The Omen

The subject of the photograph comes to an untimely end: a lightning rod plunges thorugh his chest. Other victims in the movie find themselves hanged or decapitated, all predicted through photographic anomalies.

The Omen

Perhaps the faithful should notify Vicka (the Medjugorje visionary), or at least be careful not to stand near her outside the chapel.
